Differently Abled People Film Festival
Here are three films that would work together on the topic of differently abled people. Hold a film festival with a discussion after each film. All participants see all the films at the same time.
Create breakout rooms and create a movie theater atmosphere. Give out "tickets" for participants to see different movies and have discussions as they move from theater to theater. Bring participants together as a whole group. They can create skits, stories, or their own movies. Watch Pixar's For the Birds and the classic Dr. Seuss video The Sneetches. |

The 8-Day Integrated Unit begins with an Essential Question. The Power Point presentation starts with an outline of Instructional Design which showcases the Six As from problem-based learning, and continues with aspects of 21st century learning skills. Use the handout as a guide to the PPT.
Check out the draft, example unit for ideas on developing your own topic and materials. The unit links gangs, terrorism, education, unemployment, and population density to career goals. |
Here are some media files to accompany the Gangs, Terrorism and Education unit.

21st Century Learning

Thanks to friends in Kenya, Pakistan, Dubai, and New Zealand for helping me think about the 21st Century learning skills that our young people need today. I've given several workshops on this topic, each with a slightly different take on the topic.
The Power Point outlines several instructional principles for the instructional design of engaging content units. These units begin with an essential question that no one really knows the answer to. The teacher and the class will examine various texts (written and spoken) that help answer the essential and guiding questions. The slides also outline the six As for designing problem-based units. In addition, a rubric or scoring guide is included to help teachers evaluate their own lessons. There are some tips to help teachers deliver their units including a 75 minute outline and some of the supports that might be needed in order to deliver the units. I recommend using stations and jig saw strategies to differentiate materials. It also helps to collaborate on creating the materials and gathering the resources to effectively plan for inquiry-based and problem-based units. |
